View Full Version : Who Comes Up With This Stuff...

Who are these people who continue to come up with policies that have no relevance to the job. God forbid if we have any individuality. I think they want a bunch of robots these days. We have the need for more safety equipment, more hose budgets, ancillary equipment for new apparatus on the way, ems supplies, station supplies but instead we all get thousands of dollars of helmet shields instead that nobody wanted. We have individuals who come up with the bright idea that it looks unprofessional if there are a couple of different styles on the fire ground. So without any vote or group ideas they make the style decision all on what they think looks good. And I am forced to remove the one I bought with my hard earned money and replace it with SHORTY. I apoligize if I sound very bitter but this is one example that is very dear to me. Sorry if I dont like the 2.5 inch shield that looks goofy. LAFD long live youre shields. Oh yeah not to mention its the middle of winter and we have one nomex jacket to choose from during the 30 degree or less months. Anyways I work at the greatest place around with the best(FIREFIGHTERS and TRUCK PEOPLE) so these things wont deter me on that note. Is'nt this why we come up with comitees to gather input from the troops and then make cooperative decisions........................... Twisted Evil

Ahh.... a very common frustration you share there my friend. Firefighters across the nation share the same problems that you bring up. We discuss this at the IAFF conferences every year.

There is usually a select few individuals in the department that for some reason have the backing from the Chiefs to make just about every change they want.

Make a stand. Become a person who causes the change that the TROOPS want.

Whoa. Pretty passionate about it huh?

What is the big deal about a helmet shield anyway? The public is not paying any attention to that part of your uniform.

Not to hate on you but why do you come to these forums and blow people up about whats important to them. I dont blow you up about youre love of wiping a## in a hospital. Im voicing my opinion on what I think is important to individuals who work with these kind of people who make it a point to make decisions that affect us without getting opinions from everyone it might affect........you know who I am quit hiding who you are..............

Why are you so angry? First of all, I am a professional and apparently you are not.

The issue of brother and sisterhood that you bring up is a joke when you are so attackful.

My career is not wiping **** like you say. I am a professional 911 responder.

My comment on the helmet thing you brought up is just my opinion as an person in the same industry as you ot from a citizen perspective. Calm down and be nicer. You are not doing your fellow firefighters any favors by acting so extreme.

I will accept your apology in advance.

Kuhnboyz:

Senior firefighter talking to his rookie I take it?

I love the enthusiasm you have for the job Red Hot Truckie.

Enjoy the years on the job with youth. Because before you know it, 25 years have gone by and you will look back on smaller issues like the shields and your frustration will turn into a smile when you contemplate all of the great fire service experiences you have.

Amen. 25 years and the scars to prove it. Kuhn-er... the shields are the least of your worries. If the Patawons learn from your abilities and follow your lead - that is the stuff of legends. Always remember, you are but the follower from those of the past. We are not the first but we are the current best. Learn from the mistakes - admit the mistakes - try damn hard not to REPEAT the mistakes and the Patawons will respect it. See one, do one, teach one.

If memory serves... I was once a roof guy and you were the observer. Now you are the Knower of Things. Amazing how those things evolve. Keep doing that voodoo that you do... so well.

...and so it goes...

George Lucas would be proud of you ASH702 for ensuring his creations are properly referenced.

I understand your frustration Kuhnboyz. We should all be able to wear cool looking shields.

I don't like the little ones that you mentioned. I have a tall one with my station number on it. It looks sweet.

OK, explain the shields Big Guy. Why so many and who's are they? All yours? Are we modeling different shields for the Uniform Committee? What up?

Hey Kuhnboyz..

If you guys get to use any of those shields, then no wonder they changed it on you.

That is too inconsistent.

I do like the bigger or the red one the best though.

We only use one common shield.

You finally said something sensible kuhnboyz.

We don't need to get together or anything for you to apologize anyhow.

Thanks anyway. I still have the opinion that the public is not worried about your shield things. I never even paid attention to them myself until you brought this up.

I know I'm kind of a late comer on the subject, but I was reviewing all of the postings. The helmet shield is a part of our safety gear that has more meaning to the other guys on the job than it does to the general public. I'm sure the general public doesn't care what is written on the side of an ambulance but I'm pretty sure you want to ride in one that says "Paramedic" on the side of it.

Great point Chuck Norris.

I'm sure you like having a star of life on the ambulance too hottie.

It's not the size of shield that matters anyways, it's how much it's melted. booyakasha

Don't hurt the shield. Hint...either get lower (smarter) and stay out of the superheated atmosphere, or have the truckies cut bigger holes. Let's outsmart the fire...check out this video on youtube...I bet these guys melted their shields, too.

I say we have shields only if we want them. Too much drama has evolved from this. Let's try this - come to work, earn an honest dollar, have fun, go home. No drama! I feel a new thread coming on...

I love to see melted shields on guy's helmets that work for depts that only get a few fires a year (an Indian Res. Dept. comes to mind) and there helmet and shield are trashed. Oh well I guess as long as they think it looks cool.

03-26-08, 18:19
That's what happens when you run with a City that does pump out fires. Or, it could have melted on a training burn. Not nice, let's not bag on each other, sorry.
