Way to go to westcoast911.com member LVLADDER1.
Here is a link to the story we did on the incident:
http://westcoast911.com/wp/2008/04/21/west-las-vegas-house-fire-is-fatal/
Thanks Mr. Lux for the shout out. :)
Nuke asked for details, here's ALL of them.
My partner (Rob) and I were both flattered and surprised when we found out we were getting an award for doing our job, as one old timer put it. I know all of my brothers on this site would've done the same that night.
Here are some details....
Fire came in late night on April 20th (4/20) in the "West Las Vegas" neighborhood, which is an older low income part of town. First in engine company (Northtown E-53 [NLVFD]) reported heavy fire from the front of the structure, fire from the rear of the structure, access problems due to security/ burglar bars (typical for that area) and reports of people trapped.
When we pulled on Truck 1 (LVFR) up it looked impressive, fire blowing from the front two windows and front door. Flames from the rear were ten feet over the roof. Our assignment from our captain was " ef-ing cut all the ef-ing bars". As we were finishing up the front of the house (fire attack was still there baby sitting their hose line) a neighbor said that they had seen an arm hanging out of the back bedroom window (B side of the structure). We cut the bars off, broke the rest of the glass out and tried to look inside. That's when I noticed that the bottom of the window sill was about chin level on me (I'm 5'10") and I couldn't see anything inside due to thick dark pressurized smoke. I boosted my partner in and used my captains back to boost myself in. Once inside we encountered moderate heat and zero visibility (6 inches). We preformed a left hand search and found nothing in the bedroom. About then PPV must've been put into place because visibility went from zero to about 3 or 4 feet. We entered the hallway and we were met with high heat and flames (and no hose line). So we turned around and found a bathroom at the other end of hallway. Thats where we found the victim, wedged behind the toilet. I grabbed the torso and Rob took the feet and we carried him back to the window we entered from, since fire was still in the hallway. When we got there I was shocked to stick my head out of the window and nobody was there. When help arrived we tossed him out of the window. Anyway he had second degree burns to both forearms and to the top of his head. He was transported to UMC Trauma by City Fire Rescue 201 with a sinus bradicardic rhythm. He died later the next morning, which makes it kinda weird that we received an award. Our Captain and Battalion Chief said it was because we made a "calculated risk" and went through the window without a hose line. Like I said before, I know everyone on this forum would've done the same thing and some have, without receiving an "EXCELLENCE" award.
Mr. Lux, as for my pops looking down that night.... I know he had my back. As we exited the structure my second stage popped off my mask (interspiro). A screw worked it's way out of the second stage during the fire. If it would've failed in the structure during the drag they might of had to pull me out.
Be safe and GOD bless,
Bill
Great Job. That will be a fire you'll never forget. Glad to here you guys are ok.

Hey Bill... Who/what is 6i4, 6i6, 6i11. Are they investigators??
[QUOTE= Who/what is 6i4, 6i6, 6i11. Are they investigators??[/QUOTE]
Yes they are investigators. They are also the bomb squad for all of Southern Nevada. The T.V. news and the paper always get it wrong and say, "Metro's bomb squad" but they are in fact Fire Dept. Personnel from day one. They test out of suppression for an arson/ investigator position and if they pass, then the position is contingent of the completion of a police academy (in Vegas) and "bomb" school somewhere in Texas, (I'm out). The police academy because they arrest alleged arsonists and carry guns, bomb school because they blow sh!t up.
But ya, the six ida's are investigators and no they don't have dogs..... yet.
Always hit on a "soft" 16.

Way to go LVLADDER1. It was a heroic effort.
I read in the story that the guy died, but at least you tried. Good thing your face mask for oxygen did not break.

Hey Hottie.....did I pick up on some sarcasm there? When was the last time YOU were in a fire? When YOU were in that fire and found a victim, did YOU assess that pt prior to getting that pt out the window? How much time do YOU think YOU have in an IDLH environment? Do you think YOU have a lot of time to think, especially in a highly emotionally charged situation, like finding some guy face down? I think YOU better check your attitude. Don't ever question a rescue!! Those guys did their job!! They got that guy out alive and gave him more of a chance than he had inside!! But I don't think that you really get that. So what if he died. Was he dead when they got him out? Should they have just left him there? Even if he did die, does that make what these guys did less heroic? I sure **BLEEP****BLEEP****BLEEP** Hell don't think so. Tell ya what...next time you are running a call as a single EMS unit, without fire, think of how much better it would be if we were there.
By the way, I think going to Nursing school is a GREAT idea for YOU. Enjoy FOCKER!!!
Nice job by the boyz in vegas. Oh yeah and pray you dont get those focking arson dogs in your city anytime soon. Has been nothing but trouble here. Or maybe its just the guy that handles the dog. OOps did I just say that out loud...........
I agree with VegasVic!! Our boys did a great job!! Hottie can shut the F up!!

Good thing your face mask for oxygen did not break.Hottie, I'm really replying because of VegasVic and Ash 702's replies to you.**BLEEP** I didn't pick up on the sarcasm in you're quote...I was hoping you were being sincere.**BLEEP** What I did pick up on (and it's not your fault because you are not a fireman) was your lack of knowledge of firefighting...it's called an SCBA. But please tell me you wouldn't use oxygen in or around open flame. Hottie, based on reading VegasVic's and Ash 702's remarks, I think your past remarks/anymosity toward the fire service is coming back to haunt you...take this opportunity to become a supporter of all things 911.

LVLADDER1 said his mask almost broke because of a screw. I was not being sarcastic.
I was trying to give him an at a boy. And as for you Jude, you know what I meant.
Why are you guys always attacking me? Why are all of you so arrogrant?
I'm going to stay out of this area and only check out the EMS forum for now on.
Thanks for the ATTABOY hottie...... My boys were just looking out. After reading most of your posts you seem to come of a little harsh on the fire side of things sometimes but that might be becuase of lack of education about the fire dept. I hope you continue to read and post in the Firefighting Forums, it's always entertaining to read your posts. Remember this is just an internet forum and everybody in here is 6'5" and 250lbs. of solid muscle.
Hottie, thats the best thing you have posted yet on this site. GREAT IDEA! See Ya
Strong work guys, glad nobody else was hurt. Kuhn, I think you are correct on the second part it’s definitely the handler not the dog, and yes I did say that!

Hottie,
I thought you were just getting on my buddy's junk by pointing out that the pt ultimately died. If you were not being a smarta$$, sorry. But I don't think that I am the only one that feels like you sometimes bash fire a little.
Anyway, please don't stop posting....I like arguing with people. And you make it easy to argue:D

Ash, you need to sack up and stick to your guns!! If you think somebody is being an a$$, stay with your opinion. You say like to argue, yet you can't even take a side. I said it once and I'll say it again. Hottie was out of line!! She likes to bash fireman, probably because she was dumped by one, and she is just bitter!! Grow a set, son!! Stop kissing A$$!!
