View Full Version : Undeserving receiving new equipment
Do any other departments utilize the age old practice that the "Downtown" or Central stations receive the latest equipment regardless of the peril it puts the other companies responding in dilapitated equipment. This discriminatory and archaic practice needs to be discontinued, and the sooner the better. It is well documented throughout the Country that the guys working in these Stations are generally little more than yes men and glorified "Fire Buffs" at best. It is just unfortunate that the true hard working tiller certified Truckees have to again endure this blatant snub as the "Hollywood" firefighters revel in the satisfaction that a new Truck sits on the apparatus floor while they sleep safe and sound knowing we are out there all night ensuring there safety. Have a nice day.......................... HI CHILE:)

650,
You absolutely hit the nail on the head with that one. It has been so typical for such unfair practices of equipment allocation to occur within the fire service.
In my 26 years of serving my department, I have seen this happen over and over again.
It is the absolute evisceration of departmental moral separation. It tends to cause a them and us attitude towards our brothers housed at the primadonna stations.
Add a few young and impersonal folks into your administrative staff, and the obvious only perpetuates itself for years on end. I understand your frustration. I would even venture to say that your station is also much busier than the one getting the new equipment.
It's the same here in Northern California.
That may be the way is in Cali...but not here is Vegas!! I work downtown (Not Central, but downtown none the less) on the busiest Engine company and busiest Rescue in the City. We have one of the oldest engines and a one of a kind experimental rescue. We recieved about 8 new rescues over the last year and the Stations out in the North that don't run 1/10 of the calls we run got some of those rescues. Our engine has the most miles on it in the fleet, and when we received 5 new engines over the last 4 months and into the next 6, we are not slated to be getting one. Station 1 also has some of the older engines and they aren't getting new rigs either. It is all the stations that don't run as many calls as we do downtown.
Battalion 1 runs easily the same number of calls that the other 2 battalions combined!! And we still have the older rigs. Our equipment is by no means "Run Down," but we ain't getting the latest and greatest stuff down here. And even if we did, it would be well deserved.
Hey 650racer. I feel your frustration. I do have to question your use of the words undeserving in your title. "Central" does run its fair share of calls. Not much different than your call volume I am sure, as both trucks are among the busiest in the state.
I would be willing to bet that both new Tillers will be put into service simultaneously. When the first shows up, it will be Used for training before either will be put into service. So Central will be the Guinea Pig if you will. You may actually be better off not getting the first one. Let all the Oops's happen on the training rig.
I know it doesn't fix the history, but maybe some peace of mind for this round.

My department utilizes a bid system that allows employees to pick their station based on availability and their seniority. If the "Downtown" station seemed to get the best equipment and that's what I wanted, I would bid there when opportunity and seniority allowed. I have always felt, however, that it was the crew and not the station or the equipment or even the call volume that makes it fun to come to work.

Out here in our slowest station when I was sent here because no one else wanted to bid here I was told to drop the 6 and 5 out of the 650racer and then believe what is left of the story. GO figure, two trucks and two stations, it is like having twins someone will be 1 to 2 minutes older.
It is really sad that we have people on our departments who have to continue to put people down, including those individuals who recieve letters about themselves and then stoop to that type of mentality. Why cant you just leave your frustrations to the fact that central fire stations recieve new equipement and leave out the bashing of the people who like to work at those stations. Whatever happened to the brotherhood?
This is really sad!
:(
Curly have you not worked long enough with me to recognize sarcasm? This whole post was a jab at all the bashing that goes on here and is tongue in cheek. I have actually enjoyed working with everybody (both trucks) since I came to the North end. My name is on my thread so absolutely no hiding behind the anonymity of the net. Is it not over the top enough? whatever

Man, you've got a big pot stirrin' spoon. I wonder if it was easier for the guys you work with to tell that you were just joking. For a minute I thought you were really the victim of some serious injustice.

We just put 6 brand new Peirce Quantum's in service last month.
Station 1, "Central" or "Downtown" received ZERO. Battalion 1 (our busy Battalion) only got 2 of those engines. The stations in the burbs, Battalion 4 (our slow Battalion) got the other 4.?. This way the Tax payers and city council members can watch the pretty new rigs drive to star bucks and the gym.
I really don't understand your post at all 650racer... It certainly doesn't work that way out here.
But anyway, hope you get some new sh1t.
