I was just wondering why some departments wear shorts as part of their uniform? Kinda looks unprofessional to me.

Shorts are optional in some departments. OPTIONAL.

Many people seem to be of the opinion that short pant uniforms make you less of a professional.

The truth of the matter is that YOU determine how professional you are. NOT your tattoos uniform pants or the lack thereof.

I like the shorts, it's so much cooler.
I've always been a fan of crew integrity, wear what your captain is wearing. I think it looks good when a crew shows up wearing the same thing. Weather it be shorts & polos, Class B & long pants, Bunkers & T-shirt or "PT" gear.
As long as you act professional and don't look like a slob i.e. wearing old faded *BLEEP**BLEEP**BLEEP**BLEEP*.
Then it doesn't matter....
Can ya smell it..............

My old home town got kinda hot in the summer. Bakersfield California. Seems even to me, (five miles right of Attila the Hun) that duty uniforms should reflect hot weather realities. Do other hot towns allow shorts?

Light weight/light color duty uniforms can only go so far. Could/would shorts help? Believe they just might. Public behavior can also go a long way. Anyway, some things that make the job easier are a good idea. :) :) :)

Why shorts? I'll tell you why!! 100+ days in a row of 100 degree weather!! We live in the desert and it is hot. Shorts are the best part of our summer uniform.
Does it LOOK less professional? Maybe. But if you conduct yourself in a professional fashion, fashion doesn't matter. Just agreeing with other posts here, but I do LOVE my work shorts. Although, with as much as I wear them, you might think I would get a tan. Oh well, better cover the pale skin with Tattoos!!:)

I am OK with shorts, especially for you guys who work in the IE. I know it can get incredibly hot out there. I am sure you have a policy that determines when you have to put your turnouts on over your shorts.

FACT: "shorts" ARE pants, they are just shorter.

FACT: pants are just long "shorts"

MYTH: shorts look unprofessional.

FACT: People who are/act unprofessional are unprofessional.

I like shorts. I agree that the person makes the position professional by his or her conduct. As long as they look well groomed in shorts uniform pants, firefighters should adopt it as common wear for their department. Especially for us here in Cali.
