It is with great sadness and profound sense of loss that we mention the passing of our brother, Creig Nece, today. Creig suffered a back injury a few days ago in Glamis while off-roading with others from our department. He was recuperating in the hospital when he suddenly died this morning - it is unknown at this time what occurred. He was 53 and an active duty captain at Station 227. Creig spent almost 20 years with us and was known for his humor and wit. We are all shocked and numb from this sudden loss. Our station flags fly at half-staff while we go about the business of grief and remembrance. I have to stop writing this every now and then while I collect myself and wipe away the tears. Creig was a leader, a brother and a friend. I feel compelled to write something here in his honor and memory even though the news is only a few hours old.
I don't know why it was time to leave, Creig... it makes the loss that much more painful. The times I spent with you were golden and filled with laughter. I loved your comments, your outlook, your insight and your friendship. I'm comforted by the faith that you're resting well and in no distress. Please put in a good word for me - like we agreed so many years ago.
Rest in peace and go with God, Creig. For those that know the story - you're in the right room now, Smokejumper.
I love you, Brother.
